An exhibition of photographs by Eva Sajovic at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning.
I am showing portraits of individuals from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities from the UK, Slovenia and Italy, accompanied by the subjects’ own words.
The aim of Be-Longing is to promote an understanding of Traveller communities and counter the unspoken prejudices about such people. The core of my work consists of portraits of the people I have met while exploring this subject. In addition, to take my experiences of these communities further, and to invite dialogue and debate, I am making public some of the conversations I have had with the people I have photographed, and with others who have supported my research. There will be workshops, screenings and seminars during the exhibition at 198.

- "Myself and an Irish Traveller girl went to the private view and it was brilliant. Eva has done so really great work"
- "The ones I liked best were the ones of the semi outdoor living with the mirror on the door, open and shut. Also the cabin with the cooker and the Christmas tree. The surfaces seemed so luminous, the broken lino and chipboard would be awful to live with but looked beautiful. It was only when I was trying to see whether the cooker was gas or electric that I realised the viewpoint was too low to make it out and she had planned it like that. Artful! Of the people, I liked the young girl getting ready for her night out and that Damian man was dead handsome! And the pink glass lady was spectacular."
